I took C programming in college and I want to try my hand at it again. Is there any software that will run a C program or programs in other languages? Also, is there any language that has become very popular since the early 1990s that would be even better to learn than C?
I am currently learning Java at University… this is the main programming language being taught there at the moment.
What I want to know is, to get a good successful programmer/software engineer job… should I learn any other language(s)?
If so… what language(s) should I mainly focus on?
Not interested in LAMP (web design side) at the moment!).

I want something for free and would use it at home not comercial purposes. I do not want anything illegal.
I have got a lot of (hundreds) text files content some event id / fault log, error numbers, location codes, time stamps and some text about the problems encounted. that I first want to organise, then carry out some simple cross tab type procedures on numeric data field. – Ideas welcome.
