I took C programming in college and I want to try my hand at it again. Is there any software that will run a C program or programs in other languages? Also, is there any language that has become very popular since the early 1990s that would be even better to learn than C?
Like if u go to college and u want to learn to speak several languages, do most of them have programs that are free so u leanr to speak that language fluently?

I’m interested in finally learning a programming language but I don’t know which one to start with. I’ve been reading about C++ the last few days since I know it’s a popular one, but is it the best? All of my lame newbie software is just text in a black box. Is it going to get better as I learn more, or am I going the wrong route and should switch languages?
I was thinking Python or Visual Basic, but since I’m on Mac OS X there’s a chance some languages won’t work. Site links would be helpful.
